NH Episode 8
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you are offered a serving of nuts?. If you always have a negative reaction towards nuts then I guess you need to reconsider your decision, unless of course you have an allergic reaction to nuts. And if you don't get allergy from nuts, lets give you some very good reasons why you should have them included in your diets or eating routine daily or as frequent as possible. in this post, I will be covering some major health benefits of nuts and some general misconceptions about nuts.
It's of a truth that nuts fall in the major group of foods that easily cause mild to life-threatening allergy in some individuals of different ages. Asides this, nuts are also believed by some to be unhealthy because they are mostly exploited for their vegetable oils this has made them to classify them as fats and oil. However, nut are either fruits(drupes)- Cashew nuts, Almonds, Walnuts, Coconuts. or Tree nut - Hazelnuts, Chestnuts. Or Legumes - Peanuts(Groundnuts). These are all categorized as nuts because of their high protein content, high fibre content and oil content too. It's also safe to note that they contain safe and healthy oils for consumption, and when eating whole is very good for your health.
Secondly, it is believed that eating nuts promotes weight gain in people due to the oil contents in the seeds. The truth is that the major composition of the nuts are protein and fibre, these two help to bulk up your diet and have very important roles in slowing down digestion and absorption of food along the digestive tract thereby reducing the absorption of excess calories. Nuts also contain safe oils that support the heart health and circulatory system.
Another very good reason why you should have nuts is because you can only have just enough not excess. This makes nuts the perfect snacks to eat in-between meals, because they make you feel full after a handful or better still encourage you to drink much water to re-hydrate.
Bottom line, if you are on a weight loss routine, then I strongly recommend you spice up your day by throwing in a couple variety of nuts to the mix. Also if you are hypertensive, nuts are very good for heart health because they contain high amounts of omega 3 and other safe forms of fatty acids. Lastly, if you are trying to combat malnutrition especially protein deficiency, being nuts is a very safe way to go.
